Recently I started making these crochet cup cozies to sell at a local shop. They work up so quickly and are really cute with different felt patches or faux leather tags. (tip: the cows are super popular right now and sell really well!) Here I’m going to share the free cup cozy pattern. You can also watch my YouTube tutorial for visual reference. Before I list out the pattern I want to talk about yarn choices. The yarn I used in my tutorial is Baby Bear that I found at Joann’s. It is labeled as a super bulky 6, but in my opinion is not even CLOSE! So I used it like a bulky 5 or even a worsted weight yarn. If you compare this yarn (baby bear) to the Bernat super bulky blanket yarns you would need two or three strands of this worked together to make up for it. You can also work this pattern up in worsted weight yarn but you will need to chain more, and make more middle rounds to make up for the thinner yarn.
To Begin:
Materials: I used Baby Bear Yarn in color way Toffee, a yarn needle, measuring tape, and an H 5.00mm crochet hook. I like these Tulip hooks.
Chain 27 (used one turning chain, if you prefer to use two turning chain for the half double crochet stitch then chain 28)
Row 1: Half double crochet into 2nd ch from hook and each chain (26sts) Give your work a stretch, laying flat it should measure about 8.5 inches long.
Now create a ring, by slip stitching to your first stitch made.
Round 2: ch 1, hdc into the first stitch (the same stitch you slip stitched into) Now you will camel stitch the rest of your stitches. The camel stitch is made by half double crocheting into the diagonal loop at the back of each of your previous stitches. Tip the top of the stitch (regular V on top) forward. You will then see the 3rd loop you need to work into.
Working this loop will push the top of the stitch forward and give your work a great texture. Slip stitch to your first stitch to complete the round. You will have the same 26 stitches.
Round 3: Repeat round 2.
Round 4: ch 1, Hdc into each stitch. For this round I like to work in between the stitches instead of the tops. This creates a really smooth fabric.
Round 5-7: Repeat round 4. (If you are working with smaller yarn or you have a taller cup you can make more of these rounds)
Round 8 and 9: Repeat round 2. Your work will now measure about 4 to 4.5″.
From here, turn your cozy inside out and weave in all your ends. You will need to close the gap on row one using one of the tails. Be sure to weave them in several directions for more security. You can use fabric glue to the ends as well. I have been using this fabric fusion glue and I love it. It takes 24 hours to cure. Be sure to leave your cozy inside out so the glue doesn’t ruin your work.
I got my felt patches from Etsy. You need to cut them out by hand but they are super cute!
